Since the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 76 years ago, nuclear weapons continue to threaten our world in a multitude of ways. Community members in the Des Moines area have been commemorating the anniversary of these tragic events for the past 40 years.
Our tradition has been to gather at the Bell of Peace and Friendship, a gift from the citizens of Japan's Yamanashi province to the people of Iowa, at the state capitol. This year there is a second event to educate people on the dangers of nuclear weapons and what we can do to help eliminate them once and for all. |
